OpenAI unveils Sora: the future of AI video creation

OpenAI has introduced Sora, its text-to-video AI model, as part of the 12-day «Ship-mas» product release series. Sora is now available on Sora.com for ChatGPT subscribers in the US and most other countries. It is not yet clear when Sora will be available in Switzerland.

The new version, Sora Turbo, offers advanced features such as generating videos from text, animating images, and remixing videos. With a ChatGPT Plus subscription, users can create up to 50 prioritized videos (1,000 credits) in a resolution of up to 720p and with a duration of 5 seconds.

The recently introduced ChatGPT Pro subscription for $200 per month offers unlimited generations and up to 500 prioritized videos with a resolution of 1080p and a duration of 20 seconds. This more expensive subscription also allows users to download videos without watermarks and to run up to five generations simultaneously.

Sora offers a range of innovative features:

  • Text-to-video creation: Users can generate high-quality videos based on text input alone, without resorting to traditional film production.
  • Image animation: This feature makes it possible to create dynamic videos from static images, bringing more movement and life to content.
  • Video remixing: Existing videos can be customized with new elements or styles, offering more creative possibilities.

The different subscription levels offer tiered features:

  • ChatGPT Plus: For $20 per month, up to 50 prioritized videos can be created in 720p resolution and up to 5 seconds long.
  • ChatGPT Pro: For $200 a month, users get unlimited generations, up to 500 prioritized videos in 1080p quality with a maximum length of 20 seconds. In addition, videos can be downloaded without watermarks and up to five videos can be generated simultaneously.

OpenAI places a high value on the responsible use of the platform. Users must ensure that their content does not include underage persons or offensive, violent or copyrighted material. Violations can lead to an account being blocked.

Even without a ChatGPT subscription, you can use Sora to browse the feed of AI-generated videos from other users. While Sora is now available in the US and many other countries, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced that it will take some time before it is launched in large parts of Europe and the UK.

In Switzerland, too, Sora will not be available for the time being. OpenAI has not yet given any precise reasons, but it is suspected that regulatory requirements and data protection regulations could play a role. Switzerland faces similar challenges to the EU, particularly in complying with strict data protection guidelines such as the GDPR.

Furthermore, the gradual introduction of Sora could be strategically motivated to test the rollout in larger markets first before considering smaller countries such as Switzerland. It is currently unclear when exactly Sora will be available in Switzerland.
